IDIBGI participates in the World Breast Cancer Day of Girona FC

25 October 2023

Last Thursday, October 19, World Breast Cancer Day was commemorated. This year, the day was extended until Sunday 21 to give a footballing touch to the cause.

Girona FC joined the World Breast Cancer Day to support the research of the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI), as well as the Oncolliga Girona Foundation and the Spanish Association Against Cancer of Girona. For this reason, on the same Thursday, the club put on sale the "Som Tossudes" solidarity t-shirt, to raise funds for the three entities. In Sunday's match against Almeria, to make the cause visible, the players of the red and white team also wore this shirt when they took the field at Montilivi.

The Fan Zone organized by the club before the match, gave the public the opportunity to approach the stands and get information about IDIBGI's biomedical research in breast cancer, and about the activity of the other two entities in support of cancer patients and their families.

Minutes before the start of the match, the director of IDIBGI, Dr. Marga Nadal, was able to address a few words to the more than 12,000 people attending the stadium and highlight the importance of breast cancer research to improve the quality of life of patients.

Among the 22 research groups at IDIBGI, 5 do research every day to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this disease from different approaches.

Many of these IDIBGI researchers are professionals from the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Girona. Such as the case of researcher Ariadna Roqué, from the Precision Oncology research group in Girona, who accompanied the Girona FC dog, Canya, on her usual walk to the center circle of the pitch, just before the start of the match.

IDIBGI thanks Girona FC for their support to the cause and the possibility of making visible the biomedical research carried out in Girona.
