Ultracentrifuge

The ultracentrifuge is a centrifuge optimized to spin a rotor at very high speeds, capable of generating accelerations of up to 100,000 rpm. The basis of ultracentrifugation is to separate the components of a solution based on their size and density.

Among the main applications of ultracentrifugation is the separation of proteins and nucleic acids, cellular organelles, or lipoproteins.

Services and equipment

The ultracentrifugation facility is equipped with the Optima XPN100 (Beckman Coulter) and has two rotors:

  • Fixed-angle rotor 70Ti (1 to 8 samples, maximum speed of 70,000 rpm, tubes for volumes of 5 ml and 26.3 ml).
  • Swinging-bucket rotor SW55Ti (1 to 6 samples, maximum speed of 55,000 rpm, maximum volume of 5 ml).

The service is offered with assistance from platform staff or as self-service.
