The ultracentrifuge is a centrifuge optimized to spin a rotor at very high speeds, capable of generating accelerations of up to 100,000 rpm. The basis of ultracentrifugation is to separate the components of a solution based on their size and density.
Among the main applications of ultracentrifugation is the separation of proteins and nucleic acids, cellular organelles, or lipoproteins.
