7 May 2024
  • The event will unite sport and solidarity on 15 and 16 June at the club's facilities in Porqueres, and registration will be open until 7 June.
  • The proceeds will go towards improving knowledge, diagnosis and treatment of cardio-respiratory diseases, which can seriously affect patients' quality of life.
  • In parallel, there will also be a charity raffle with a Girona FC shirt and ball signed by the players.

The Pàdel Estany club is organising a charity paddle tennis tournament to raise funds for research at the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI). The sporting and charity event will be held on the weekend of 15 and 16 June at its facilities in Porqueres (Pla de l'Estany). Registration is open until 7 June and can be made by emailing Info@padelestany.cat or calling the club at 644512155 (places are limited). In parallel to the tournament, a charity raffle will be held in which a Girona FC shirt and ball signed by the players will be drawn.

The funds raised will go to IDIBGI's research on Cardiovascular Respiratory Diseases, research led by Dr. Olga Tura. ‘In our research group, we are dedicated to understanding, diagnosing and treating cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, such as pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, sleep apnoea and persistent COVID,’ explains Dr. Tura.

She adds: ‘Patients with these diseases have serious complications affecting the lungs, blood vessels and heart. For example, 50% of patients with sleep apnoea are more likely to have a stroke or myocardial infarction. Other examples are pulmonary hypertension and persistent COVID-19, which ‘are associated with blood vessel damage that significantly increases cardiovascular risk,’ says Dr. Tura.

‘This is why it is vital to continue research. Only through the development of innovative tools and treatments can we significantly improve the quality of life of patients, but also find effective care for these serious diseases,’ remarks Dr. Tura.

The Pàdel Estany club has decided to support this cause by organising the charity tournament and encourages everyone to participate: ‘It's an opportunity to be healthy while enjoying sport and, at the same time, contributing to biomedical research, which is so important for improving people's health’, explains Montse Planas, director of Pàdel Estany. The tournament will have male, female and mixed categories, and registration is priced at 15 euros with ‘Welcome Pack’ included.

In parallel to the tournament, there will also be a charity raffle in which a Girona FC shirt and a ball signed by the players will be raffled off. The raffle ticket to participate in the raffle is 2 euros.
