IDIBGI publishes the virtual game "Mite o Ciència" (Myth or Science) for scientific dissemination

26 April 2024
  • The centre invites you to discover curiosities about science and health through a virtual escape room, where participants will have to distinguish between myths and science to access informative research videos hidden inside well-known films.
  • This dissemination project has been made possible thanks to a grant for the promotion of scientific, technological and innovation culture awarded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

The Institute of Biomedical Research of Girona (IDIBGI) is launching the popular science game "Mite o Ciencia", with the aim of bringing science closer to the public and revealing interesting discoveries and curiosities about health and science. The aim of this initiative is to make the biomedical research carried out at IDIBGI understandable and entertaining. The virtual game is available at the link:https://idibgi.org/miteociencia

Participants in this virtual escape room must distinguish between myths and science and overcome some challenges to gain access to the IDIBGI laboratories, where they will find informative videos on science and health. The game environment is inspired by a virtual platform with scenarios based on well-known films, where research staff and information are hidden to protect them from bots, intruders who spread false news and cause confusion on social networks.

Five film sets

The game "Mite o Ciència" becomes a journey where you can discover, in a simple and entertaining way, different lines of research and curious facts related to biomedical research at IDIBGI. This is a scientific dissemination initiative that the research centre has been able to promote thanks to a grant for the Promotion of Scientific, Technological and Innovation Culture, awarded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

Initially the game consists of five scenarios, to which new ones will be added over time. Each of them is inspired by a film work that is related in some way to a research project of the researcher. The first tests will be carried out by the research groups in Chromosome Replication; Digestive Diseases and Microbiota; Respiratory Diseases; Nutrition, Eumetabolism and Health; and Cerebrovascular Pathology.

The game "Mite o Ciència" not only offers an entertaining and educational experience for everyone, but can also be a valuable tool to awaken the interest of secondary school students in biomedical research. Through immersion in the game's cinematic scenarios and challenges, students can learn interactively about different areas of biomedical research and develop critical thinking by distinguishing between scientific myths and realities. This not only enriches their understanding of science and health, but may also inspire them to consider a career in the field.
