About the project

What has been the impact of the pandemic on the early detection of cancer?

What are the differences in the incidence of haematological neoplasms before and after the pandemic?

Summary of the idea:

The social and economic impact of COVID-19 has been devastating, but the health impact is unprecedented in recent decades.

In the case of oncological patients and, specifically, those with haematological neoplasms, they tend to have high levels of immunosuppression and can develop more serious respiratory viral infections than patients with other tumours. In this sense, the prognosis of these patients may have been affected by this pandemic.

Objectives, impact and proposed solution:

The aim of this project is to analyse the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic in Girona in relation to the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer patients, especially those with haematological malignancies.

In this sense, the aim is to analyse the differences in the incidence and survival of patients with haematological neoplasms diagnosed before and after the onset of the pandemic. Likewise, the aim is to describe the incidence of COVID-19 in patients with this type of cancer and the role of this infection as a prognostic factor of the disease compared to other types of cancer.

With the knowledge acquired, it will be possible to adopt measures to strengthen future health interventions, both in the short term and in the possible appearance of other pandemics.
