The 3rd Girona Conference on Research for Residents - Fundació Mutual Mèdica was successfully held this morning at the Palau de Congressos de Girona, with the attendance of some 200 people. This is the third edition of a conference that maintains the mission of promoting research among the residents of the Girona region. The event is organised by the Institute for Biomedical Research of Girona Dr. Josep Trueta (IDIBGI) together with the teaching units of the main hospitals and health institutions of the Girona Health Region specialising in the field of biomedical research.

This year's programme has been especially focused on young health professionals and their first steps in the world of research, taking up the proposals of the residents themselves. Around one hundred residents had the opportunity to present their research work, carried out as part of their specialised training. In addition, a round table was held in which young health professionals shared their initial experiences in research. In parallel, a keynote speech on research and Artificial Intelligence was given by Carolina Garcia Vidal, researcher at IDIBAPS and Hospital Clínic.

‘Encouraging a research culture among trainee healthcare professionals is key to combining these two activities in their professional future. Quality health care is only possible if doctors, nurses and other health care professionals also research how to improve it, always for the benefit of society,’ says Dr. Marga Nadal, Director of IDIBGI.

To organise the event, the IDIBGI collaborated with the teaching units of the Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta Hospital, the Institut d'Assistència Sanitària, ICS Girona Primary Care, Serveis de Salut Integrats Baix Empordà, Fundació Salut Empordà - through the Institut de Recerca Glòria Compte -, the Corporació de Salut del Maresme i la Selva and, this year, also the Fundació Hospital d'Olot i Comarcal de la Garrotxa, convening their respective residents. The conference was sponsored by the Fundació Mutual Médica and the Girona Health and Medical Sciences Association. Girona City Council and the Auditori - Palau de Congressos de Girona also collaborated with the conference.

Awards for the best work
A total of 95 papers were presented at the conference, highlighting the outstanding research activity of the residents. The best papers were presented in oral communication format as part of the programme, while the rest were presented as scientific posters, which the residents were also able to defend during the day.

At the end of the event, the awards for the best scientific papers by residents, sponsored by the Fundació Mutual Mèdica, were presented. The winning papers in the Oral Communication category were: ‘Aplicació de POCUS al despistatge d'lesió d'òrgan d'òbiana en consultes externes de pacients amb infecció pel VIH’, exposat per José Andrés Marchena, resident de Medicina Interna a l'Hospital de Palamós; ‘Socio-economic deprivation and management of DM2 in Primary Care in Catalonia’, presented by Maria Ramon, resident in Primary Care at the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS) Girona; and ‘Prolonged inhaled sedation with isoflurane: Experiència a un hospital de tercer nivell", presented by Laia Tarré, resident in Intensive Care Medicine at the Hospital Universitari Dr. Josep Trueta de Girona.
