Their profiles are among the 1,000 Spanish scientists with the greatest impact in "Google Scholar", the world's most comprehensive academic database used by the CSIC to prepare this ranking.

The CSIC list includes profiles of Spanish scientists working in national or international research centers and universities, as well as foreign researchers working in Spain. The ranking includes research personnel from all areas of science, not only biomedicine. This 2021, the list has grown to over 100,000 researchers, reaching 101,121.

Dr. José Manuel Fernández-Real is ranked 207th (up 8 positions from the 2020 ranking), with an h-index of 92 and more than 30,000 citations. Dr. Fernández-Real is the head of the Nutrition, Eumetabolism and Health group at IDIBGI and CIBEROBN, Professor of Medicine at the University of Girona (UdG) and Head of the Endocrinology Section at the Dr. Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona.

In position 291 of the CSIC ranking is Dr. Javier A. Menéndez (up 18 positions), with an h-index of 84 and almost 30,000 citations of his work. Dr. Menéndez is the head of the Metabolism and Cancer group of the Program against Cancer Therapeutic Resistance (ProCURE) of the Institut Català d'Oncologia (ICO)/IDIBGI.

Dr. Joaquín Serena is ranked 679th (up 68 positions), with an h-index of 68 and has nearly 20,000 citations of his scientific papers. Dr. Serena is the head of the Cerebrovascular Pathology group at IDIBGI, Coordinator of the Stroke Program of the Girona Health Region and also director of the Neurovascular Pathology Unit at the Dr. Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona.
