The 4th Girona Research Conference for Residents highlights the work of young health professionals

  • The fourth edition was promoted by the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI) and the Teaching Units of the Dr. Josep Trueta University Hospital of Girona - ICS Girona, the Institute of Health Care, Primary Care ICS Girona, the Salut Empordà Foundation, the Integrated Health Services of Baix Empordà, the Maresme and Selva Health Corporation, and the Olot and Garrotxa Regional Hospital Foundation.
  • The event was sponsored by the Mutual Médica Foundation and the Girona Association of Medical and Health Sciences.
  • Four awards were given for the best oral presentations and three for the best scientific posters.

The Girona Conference Center hosted the 4th Girona Research Conference for Residents – Mutual Médica Foundation, an event aimed at promoting research among medical residents in the Girona region. Once again, the event was sponsored by the Mutual Médica Foundation and the Girona Association of Medical and Health Sciences, with the collaboration of the Girona City Council and the Auditorium – Conference Center.

The conference was organized by the Dr. Josep Trueta Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI), in collaboration with the Teaching Units of the Dr. Josep Trueta University Hospital of Girona - ICS Girona, the Institute of Health Care, Primary Care ICS Girona, the Salut Empordà Foundation, the Integrated Health Services of Baix Empordà, the Maresme and Selva Health Corporation, and the Olot and Garrotxa Regional Hospital Foundation. Residents from all these institutions across Girona were invited to attend.

Dr. Marga Nadal, director of the IDIBGI, emphasized the importance of research in providing better care: “Research is not an ‘add-on’, it is an essential part of care excellence. Only through research can we find better ways to care and heal.”

The event featured two keynote lectures. Dr. Alberto Zamora, coordinator of Teaching, Research, and Innovation at the Maresme and Selva Health Corporation and head of the Digital Health Innovation research group at IDIBGI, delivered a lecture titled “Digital Health Innovation”, in which he stressed the importance of integrating digital transformations in healthcare. Meanwhile, Dr. Jordi Bruix, emeritus researcher of the Hepatic Oncology Research Group (BCLC) at IDIBAPS – Hospital Clínic, gave a talk entitled “Biomedical Research: those who ask have already answered”, focusing on key aspects of a research career such as mentorship, effort, and mobility.

Awards for Best Scientific Works

During the event, 90 research projects were presented. The top 11 were shared as Oral Communications, while the rest were presented as scientific posters with public defense.

The awards for the best Oral Communications, sponsored by the Mutual Médica Foundation, went to the following studies: “Adequacy of empirical antimicrobial therapy in infections in Baix Empordà: analysis of patients with positive blood cultures and biological cultures of multi-resistant bacteria”, presented by Fàtima Fernández, resident at the Integrated Health Services of Baix Empordà; “Effect of training professionals in a Primary Care Center on polypharmacy”, presented by Sílvia Huelgas, resident at ICS Girona; and “Comparison of cemented vs uncemented bipolar hemiarthroplasty in femoral neck fractures: a multicenter retrospective cohort study”, by Albert Teixidó, resident at Hospital Trueta.

A fourth award, sponsored by the Girona Association of Medical and Health Sciences, recognized the study “Hemodynamic optimization guided by the Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) to reduce postoperative myocardial injury”, by Andrea Izquierdo, resident at Hospital Trueta.

In the scientific poster category, sponsored by the Mutual Médica Foundation, the winners were: “Dural arteriovenous fistula as a treatable cause of pulsatile tinnitus: case series”, presented by Elisabet Campanyà, Neurology resident at Hospital Trueta; “Safe medication use: detection and prevention of prescription errors in the general surgery ward”, presented by Paula Creus, resident at Hospital Trueta; and “Pharmacokinetic monitoring of Amikacin. Achieving new pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic targets”, by Carla Subirana, resident at Hospital Trueta.
