The crowdfunding campaign "More research, more life" by Lali Vila and the Cursa de la Dona de Castelló d'Empúries, together raise up to 14,800 euros, resources that will go towards research into ovarian cancer by the Precision Oncology group of the Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBGI) and the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) in Girona.
On the one hand, the campaign "More research, more life" has been promoted by Lali Vila, an ovarian cancer patient, and launched in December 2023, has managed to raise 6,000 euros for research into this gynaecological cancer. It is an infrequent pathology compared to other cancers, but with a great need for research to find new therapeutic strategies to treat and prevent it.
In parallel, the Associació Esport i Vida de Castelló d'Empúries, which organises the Cursa de la Dona de Castelló every year, has decided to donate the funds raised in the Cursa to Lali Vila's crowdfunding campaign, supporting her cause. The 7th edition of the race, held this year, took place on Sunday 2 June.
In Spain, around 3,200 cases are diagnosed every year and almost 2,000 women die from this disease. Most cases of ovarian epithelial cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Despite advances in cancer treatment, many of these patients relapse and, as a result, their prognosis may improve.
The donation was made at a ceremony held this week in Castelló d'Empúries, which was attended by friends of Lali Vila, representatives of the Esport i Vida Association, the oncologist and researcher Pilar Barretina, and the IDIBGI's head of sponsorship, Ferran Pedró.
We at IDIBGI and ICO Girona would like to express our sincere thanks for this initiative and the great effort made by Lali Vila and the Esport i Vida Association in supporting research, which is key to improving the survival of these patients in the future.
