The Nutrition, eumetabolism and health research group, led by Professor Manuel Fernández-Real is made up of 12 doctors (Medicine, Biology and Engineering), 7 pre-graduate researchers, 4 endocrinologists, 3 research technicians, 2 lab technicians, 4 dieticians and 1 nurse.

  • Type 2 genomic/genetic diabetes and obesity (including microRNA and long non-coding RNA)
  • Biology of the adipose tissue
  • Iron as a modulator of inflammation to metabolic diseases
  • The role of microbiota in obesity and type 2 diabetes
  • Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and fatty liver
  • The brain as a metabolic organ
  • Computational tools to optimize glycaemic control
Strategic objectives
  • To study the physiopathology of obesity and comorbidities associated to diabetes mellitus and NASH/NAFLD
  • To look for better biomarkers for obesity, insulin resistance and Type-2 diabetes
  • To understand the relationship between inflammation and insulin resistance
  • To further knowledge of the metabolism of iron and insulin resistance
  • To observe the interaction between the Systems Biology and Microbiome / miRNAs / Innate immune system
  • To better understand the association between micriobiome and metabolic diseases
  • To understand the interaction between microbiota and cognitive function
