The research group on mental health, gender, and aging is made up of mental health professionals specialized in the care and treatment of patients with severe mental disorders requiring psychiatric hospitalization due to acute decompensation or the de novo onset of psychiatric symptoms that cannot be managed within the mental health network.

This group is part of a larger, multidisciplinary, and multi-institutional research group (academic professionals from the University of Girona) recognized by the Agency for Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) in the SGR-CAT 2021 call as an Emerging Interinstitutional Research Group. This recognition involves collaboration between the IAS research group and the University of Girona, and it was formalized with file number 2021 SGR 00757 in a resolution from February 2023.

We believe that having this dual clinical and academic approach enriches the research and opens up the possibility of expanding the range of questions we can ask regarding mental health and other aspects of the patients we care for in the mental health network, specifically within hospitalization units, always including an intersectional and gender-sensitive perspective.

This integration provides us with a multidisciplinary research outlook, allowing us to establish collaborations and synergies with researchers from other research groups.

We also believe that this research should have an impact both on the education of IAS residents and on improving the detection, care, and treatment of the patients we serve, working towards excellence in healthcare and teaching.

Main lines of research

The main research lines of the group are as follows:

  • Affective disorders
    • Dimensionality of affective disorders.
    • Study of refractoriness.
      • Inflammation in depression.
      • Inflammation in dual depression.
    • Therapeutic strategies in refractoriness
      • Esketamine.
      • ECT.
      • Photobiomodulation.
  • Psychiatric emergency care
    • Suicidal behavior in emergency departments.
  • Referral criteria for psychiatric emergencies.
  • Substance use disorders
    • Dimensionality of patients with addictions and dual pathology.
    • New pharmacological strategies in the treatment of stimulant use disorder.
    • Evaluation of addiction awareness and related aspects.
  • Others.
Strategic objectives

• Consolidate clinical research in patients with severe mental disorders and serious addictive disorders.
• Work towards individualized assessment, considering phenomenology and dimensionality, and propose phenotypes from precision psychiatry.
• Strengthen clinical research into the etiopathogenesis of treatment resistance.
• Review assessments and treatments from an intersectional and gender-sensitive perspective.
• Be a reference group in the development of therapeutic strategies for treatment-resistant patients.
• Establish research collaborations with national and international groups focused on resistant pathologies.
