Researchers from the Girona Biomedical Research Institute Dr. Josep Trueta (IDIBGI) and the Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis (IQCC) at the University of Girona (UdG) have come together to share synergies in the fields of computational chemistry and biomedical research.
The IDIBGI and IQCC have organized a joint conference aimed at fostering collaboration among researchers from different disciplines. The meeting, held at the IDIBGI headquarters in Salt, provided an opportunity to share research lines, identify synergies, and explore new avenues for collaboration.
During the session, IQCC researchers presented their work on the chemical synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant compounds and the computational analysis of enzymatic reaction mechanisms. Meanwhile, IDIBGI teams showcased their projects developed across five major health areas: cardiovascular and respiratory health, metabolism and inflammation, neurosciences, oncohematology, and mental health.
This initial exchange of synergies highlighted the potential of combining efforts between two institutions that share a commitment to society, scientific excellence, and innovation. "This meeting is a great opportunity to create synergies with IDIBGI’s partner institutions and to join forces in the Girona region to advance our mission of improving people's health and quality of life," emphasized IDIBGI Director Marga Nadal.
Similarly, the director of the IQCC noted that "this first meeting, which we hope will be the first of many, has established an initial contact between researchers from two leading research institutes in Girona, IDIBGI and IQCC. The researchers from both institutions have realized that, despite working on topics that may initially seem unrelated, there are overlapping areas where they can collaborate and support each other." This alliance could be key to developing new therapeutic tools, predictive models, and applications that address current health challenges.
About IDIBGI
The Girona Biomedical Research Institute Dr. Josep Trueta (IDIBGI) is dedicated to translational research with the goal of improving health and healthcare. Organized into 24 research groups, it has over 400 professionals conducting studies in five major scientific areas. IDIBGI is a publicly funded private foundation under the Government of Catalonia and is part of the Research Centres of Catalonia (CERCA).
About IQCC
The Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis (IQCC) focuses its research on theoretical chemistry, homogeneous catalysis, and enzymatic catalysis. Its two core missions, research and education, are naturally and inextricably linked. With an international outlook, it promotes cooperation between theoretical and experimental teams to tackle major challenges in chemical sciences, contributing to the transition towards a circular economy. IQCC consists of 112 researchers organized into three research units and fifteen scientific teams.
