Health Psychology

Lines of research

The report ‘The Purpose of Medicine’  (www. Fundaciongrifols.org),  produced under the direction of Daniel Callahan for the prestigious research centre in bio-ethics, The Hastings Center of New York, sets out four priority aims in this field:

  • The prevention of injury and disease and the maintenance of good health.
  • The relief of pain and suffering caused by injury.
  • The care and attention of patients and those suffering from uncurable diseases.
  • The prevention of premature death and the search for ways of attaining a peaceful death.

The lines of our own research are concentrated on the first three of the above aims, especially with regard to the means of prevention related to the main causes of disease and death throughout the world such as AIDS, tobacco-related diseases and traffic accidents. The development of our research is focussed on the bio-psycho-social aspect.

Our lines of research may be summarised as follows:

1.      Sexual behaviour incurring risk and the prevention of AIDS, as well as other

sexually transmitted diseases, including unwanted pregnancies.

2.      Behaviour incurring risk driving vehicles and the accident-prevention.

3.      Addiction to certain substances and activities (mainly tobacco-related)..

4.      Nerves, stress, and state of health affecting the quality of life (mainly pain, psycho-oncology and ageing).
