The Girona Cancer Register is based on population and possesses information dating back to 1994. The total population covered is 565,304 inhabitants (2001 census) resident in the areas of Girona, La Selva, Alt Empordá, Baix Empordá, Garrotxa, Ripollés and Pla de l´Estany. This register, together with the Cancer Register of Tarragona constitute the present base population registers of Catalonia. The register was started in 1995 with the extension of the monograhic register of breast and female genital cancer (in use from 1980 to 1989). Every year, pproximately, 2,400 cases of cancer are reported in our region. This information is useful in many ways and the register is the means by which the information is made known in a standardised form, calculating the rate of incidence and cancer survival rate in our population. At the present time descriptive data are available from 1994 to 2004. This information is obtained thanks to the collaboration between the different sources, units situated both outside and inside the Girona Health Region. The register is periodically supplied with this information, respecting at all times the rules of confidentiality demanded by present-day legislation, which are contained in the security document of the UERCG. The data on the incidence of cancer are included in the information published periodically by the International Cancer Research Agency (IARC) in Lyon. The aim of the lines of research is to know the risk factors in relation to breast and cervical cancer, evaluate the risks of developing cancer, analyse the cancer survival rate among the population, and study the epidemiology of the lymphoid neoplasms and the patterns of geographic distribution in the incidence of neoplasms.
