The Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IdiBGi) was created in July 2004. The creation of this Research Institute has its origins in the Dr Josep Trueta Private Foundation (1995) and the Research Agency of the Dr Josep Trueta University Hospital of Girona (2000). The creation of IdiBGi is a very important project for the future of biomedical research in Girona and the surrounding area.

At present the Institute is made up of the groups most established in the field of biomedical research at the University of Girona, the Josep Trueta University Hospital of Girona (HJT), the Institute of Image Diagnosis (IDI); the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and the Primary Care (AP). It is intended, however, that in the nearfuture other hospital and research institutions in the area should become part of the Institute.

The ultimate aim is to create an institute that will promote quality research, be able to train researchers, promote and consolidate existing and emerging research groups for the advancement of knowledge and, whenever possible, to convert that knowledge into technology for the benefit of society. The consolidation of IdiBGi will involve the inclusion of the surrounding area of Girona in the context of the Bio-region.
In addition, it would be of great strategic interest if in the not too distant future other research entities could be brought in, entities such as the different consortiums that manage hospitals in the area, as well as other public institutions such as The Institute of Food Research and Technology (IRTA) or private institutions.
